Mount Washington Cog Railway
Mount Washington Cog Railway has since 1869 have followed a 3.5-mile track up a steep mountainside trestle for a three-hour round-trip scenic ride, with two daily departures (weekend departures only from late April to late May). Reservations are highly recommended.
The cog locomotive applies power to a cogwheel (gear wheel) on its undercarriage. The gears engage pins mounted between the rails to pull the locomotive and a single passenger car up the mountainside, burning a ton of coal and blowing a thousand gallons of water into steam along the way. Up to seven locomotives may be huffing and puffing at one time here, all with boilers tilted to accommodate the grade, which at the Jacob’s ladder trestle is 37% – the second-steepest railway track in the world. No wheels.
The base station is 6 miles east of US 302. Bring a sweater and windbreaker.
