A new economic development plan has high hopes for Smiths Falls to become the first community in Canada to endorse a cannabis tourism strategy.

In a report that will be presented to council on Monday, the town’s economic development and tourism office says it hopes to leverage the town’s new identity as the cannabis capital of Canada by implementing a tourism strategy that will hopefully draw hundreds of thousands of people to the town every year.

“The legalization of cannabis, combined with Canopy Growth’s headquarters in Smiths Falls, has presented Smiths Falls with an unparalleled opportunity to become a leader in the cannabis tourism industry,” the report reads.
