Manhunt underway for suspect charged in fatal shooting of a Missouri police officer during traffic stop – New York Daily News
A manhunt was underway in Missouri Monday for a suspect charged in the murder of a police officer.
Clinton Officer Gary Michael, 37, died after being fatally shot during a traffic stop late Sunday.
Henry County officials have issued an arrest warrant for suspect Ian McCarthy — who authorities consider to be armed and dangerous — on charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
The driver of a Dodge Nitro got out of the vehicle and started shooting, Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe told KSHB-TV.
Michael returned fire, and the suspect drove off before crashing blocks away.
“We’re not sure if any of those rounds struck the suspect, but Officer Michael was fatally wounded,” Lowe said.
The slain officer had been with the department less than a year.
McCarthy, 39, was initially named a person of interest in the shooting. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call 911.
Clinton is located about 75 miles southeast of Kansas City.
