Thanks to all who sent questions in for our first mailbag of the offseason. We’ll try to do these on a regular basis, as it figures to be an eventful winter for the Red Sox.

Let’s get to it:

1) [email protected] Is Stanton even a realistic possibility this off season or should we stop talking about?

Might as well get the most-asked question of the offseason out of the way.

This is starting to remind me of the Mariners and the same questions they got about Felix Hernandez: At some point, you have to take the franchise at its word.

The Marlins president, David Samson, said recently that team will try to get Stanton signed to an extension this offseason.

“He’s on this team [in 2015] either way,” said Samson. “I can’t wait until after the season to sit down with Giancarlo and [agent] Joel Wolfe and talk about contract. We’re ready. We want him to be a Marlin well past his arbitration years. We hope that he believes in us and believes in Miami and believes in the direction of this team and recognizes that he has a chance to be the leader of a successful team for many years to come.”

My take: Stanton won’t be much interested in committing long-term to the Marlins, and a year from now, when he’s one season away from free agency, the bidding will begin. But not yet.

2) [email protected] How do you think the Red Sox OF will look on Opening Day? Who will be starting at 3B?

The outfield is a totally open canvas at this point, but you’ve got to figure that it will include Mookie Betts, Rusney Castillo and Yoenis Cespedes.
