New England Patriots training camp: Tom Brady to Julian Edelman connection on … – MassLive.com (blog)
FOXBOROUGH — A quick wrap-up from Friday’s training camp session at Gillette:
**LeGarrette Blount was present at practice, but in shorts and T-Shirt and no helmet. He reportedly failed a physical prior to camp and remains on the non-football injury list. His absence creates an opportunity for Jonas Gray and, especially, James White, who received running back reps when Tom Brady was under center.
INDIVIDUAL PLAYS**In a 7 vs. 7 drill, Travaris Cadet lined up at running back and split wide with Jamie Collins in coverage. Cadet put a great double-move on Collins and caught a pass from Brady in the back corner of the endzone. This illustrates Cadet’s value; he lines up as a running back, but runs routes with the polish of a wide receiver. He is not a lock to make the roster, but the Patriots tend to maximize the value of unique and versatile skill position players like Cadet.
**In the first 11 vs. 11 drill, Malcolm Butler had terrific coverage on an Aaron Dobson fade to the corner of the endzone. Butler was perfectly positioned, turning his body at the right time to swat Brady’s throw away with his left hand.
**Tavon Wilson made a similar play while covering Scott Chandler in the endzone. He was beat, but showed nice recovery speed to get in position to bat the ball down. The throw by Jimmy Garoppolo could have been higher. If it was, Wilson’s recovery speed may not have mattered. After all, Chandler is 6-foot-7.
**Julian Edelman had his way with rookie Darryl Roberts, who has elite athleticism and looked solid throughout the spring. Edelman beat Roberts to the corner for a touchdown pass from Brady, and later beat him on a deep crossing route and made a leaping catch over the middle. This was not Roberts’ finest day. Both Brady and Garoppolo seemed to pick on Roberts during the red zone 11 vs. 11 work.
**Jordan Richards, who intercepted Garoppolo Thursday, had a nice breakup on a Brady pass intended for Rob Gronkowski in the endzone during 11s.
ALONG THE O-LINE**Rookies Tre’ Jackson and Shaq Mason saw plenty of reps at guard with Tom Brady under center. Incumbent Ryan Wendell remains on the PUP list, opening the door for the two rookies to see significant playing time early in camp.
**Marcus Cannon received extended reps at tackle alongside alongside Jackson. Starting right tackle Sebastian Vollmer, who reportedly underwent …Read More
