USA TODAY Sports’ Bob Nightengale discusses Derek Jeter’s final game at Yankee Stadium, another memorable moment in the shortstop’s legandary career. USA TODAY Sports

Derek Jeter is not in the New York Yankees starting lineup tonight against the Boston Red Sox.

Brendan Ryan replaces Jeter at shortstop.

“He said he’d like to have a day,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters. “It’s always difficult at this point because everybody wants to see him. He’s been through a lot, and our team’s been through a lot.”

After Thursday’s dramatic walk-off single at Yankee Stadium, Jeter announced that he would play during the weekend series at Fenway Park out of respect for the rivalry, but strictly as a designated hitter.

It doesn’t rule out that Jeter could appear in the game as a pinch hitter.

“I’ve played my last game at shortstop,” Jeter said in the postgame press conference.“I wanted to take something special from Yankee Stadium and the view from shortstop here, tonight, is what I want to take from it.
