Following is the second part of a column series, which began Sunday, about the Bartlesville High School head football coaches I have known. In 1999, Rich McGuire grabbed the reins of a Bruin football program that had carved out a 5-5 record — and barely missed out on the football playoffs — the previous season.Breaking in new starting quarterback Adam Miller — who had the benefit of the leading receiver David McPhillips back from the 1998 — McGuire and his staff navigated Bartlesville to a duplicate 5-5 mark. The 2000 Bruin team seemed consigned to a rebuilding season, with McGuire installing several sophomores, including Kolby Williams (quarterback), Michael Martinez (receiver/runningback), Willie Rogers (receiver), Tyler Collums (runningback/linebacker), Drew Williams (linebacker), Nathan Alleman (kicker/receiver/defensive back) and others, into starting roles. The talent of these rookies, combined with that of the returnees, overcame the burden of inexperience.Following the first nine games, the Bruins owned a 5-4 record and only needed a win in Week 10 at Broken Arrow in order to snap a seven-year playoff drought.Bartlesville grabbed a quick lead against the Tigers and never trailed in regulation. With time running down in the fourth quarter, Broken Arrow faced a fourth-and-long. All the Bruins had to do to seal the victory was to keep the Tigers from moving the chains. The Tigers went to the air to try to pick up the first down. The pass fell incomplete, but Bartlesville was called for a 15-yard roughing penalty on the quarterback. The Tigers then scored the tying touchdown and won the game in overtime.Following three consecutive 5-5 seasons, Bartlesville slipped to 4-6 in 2001. A broken leg suffered by Alleman proved to be a devastating mid-season loss for the Bruins. But, the Bruins turned on the power in 2002, which was McGuire’s next-to-last year. They would muscle out a 6-4 regular season record and drop a first-round playoff game at Tulsa Union. The shining moment of that high-profile campaign — spearheaded by the three-year starting seniors, who had taken their lumps in 2000 and 2001 — occurred with a near stunning upset of Jenks, Custer Stadium.Bad luck plagued the Bruins in crunch time.A promising Bruin drive in Jenks territory was disrupted by an offensive interference call on Rogers. In the last stage of regulation — with the score tied, 7-7 — Bartlesville appeared to win it on a rousing defensive …Read More
