More proof Danny Ainge explores just about every possibility: last summer, according to the Boston Herald’s Steve Bulpett, the Boston Celtics called “to see if LeBron James might be available to them.”
A couple of thoughts:
1. Yeah, that sounds about right. The rest of the world figured James would choose between Miami and Cleveland, but every GM should have called anyway. Any time the best basketball player on the planet hits free agency, the recruiting line should be very long. What if his beloved aunt had moved to Boston or something and he wanted to spend more time with her? Hey, you never know unless you try.
2. Ainge will call about anyone. So yes, expect him to be very active this summer, when the Celtics will have cap space, and when the list of free agents will include Jimmy Butler, Kevin Love, Draymond Green, DeAndre Jordan, Marc Gasol and Kawhi Leonard, among others. None of those guys are really expected to leave, but, again, you never know unless you try.
